10 Years Working

-

Time flies fast.

-

I started working early when I was 16. It was a tiring day of 16 November 1997. My first job was a disaster!

-

I was proud on what I was doing, even though the whole family was against this ‘part-time’ job in Jollibee. It can’t be more tiring than that, going to work after school. It continued for a few weeks until I really got sick, and my parents needed to call my manager. But you’d be surprised to hear that this manager wasn’t considerate enough to let me rest that day. That was the end of it.

On my third year in college, I did my practicum (On-the Job-Training as what they call it) at Duty Free Philippines. And of course, as expected, I was assigned to do boring admin stuff that are not even related to my course.

As years pass by, I managed to complete my studies (which I have not disclosed to anyone before) and to jump to jobs of different fields. One of the companies I would always remember is PeopleSupport!

And yeah, it’ll always have a special place in my heart. It’s where I got to know really good friends, and celebrated my happiest (office) birthdays. That’s when I learned that I was more than ordinary, and that my fashion was (maybe I should say ‘is’) out of this planet.

-

But there came a time when got bored with everything that is IT related. So I was planning to go out, as in out of the country. My chums really gave me so much moral support. I was eyeing on Korea, but because of this classified ad in Manila Bulletin, my focus was diverted to Singapore (and I was reminded of this neat cosmopolitan city). So I tried out!

-

I thought there would be a few of us there at the interview, there were a few hundreds of us!!! I wasn’t even interviewed on the first day, so the next day I wore my lucky long sleeves and I prepared myself (for any disaster hahaha). I saw the first person who was interviewed that day, she went out with a gloomy face. I was like ‘Mary, Joseph, you guys know I only ask a favor once in a while’.

-

Only God knows how happy I was that day!!! I got the job!

Here I was, struggling to cope not with the new environment, but with the people I was living with. They happened to be the most evil in the world (I don’t want to mention names, but they were living in Yio Chu Kang lol). Anyway, Singapore has been a learning ground for me. I was able to recognize more foreign accents than before. The phase of my life has never been faster, like this. The only thing is, I had to give up my old lifestyle. And the friends I used to know became ‘old friends’.

-

It is true, that when you go out from a company, it’ll be quite difficult to keep in touch with your old pals there. As what Nelly Furtado sings "All good things come to an end".

An ending is a beginning of something you prayed for before. It’s not too bad afterall! I guess this is how it feels for my pals who are going out of SingTel soon.

-

This blog also celebrates the ‘Filipino Spirit’. Toast to all Filipino staff in SingTel.

-

To all of my friends I worked with for the last 10 years, thank you very much!
